Allotments
In March 2010, the Parish Council agreed a lease with Suffolk County Council for a plot of land for use as allotments. Approximately one acre of land has been converted into plots and half-plots and is worked by more than 20 families in the village. There is also a Junior Allotments Club which is becoming increasingly popular. For more information, contact either the Parish Clerk or the Secretary of the Allotments Association, Helen Andrews (email).

Barton Mills is at one end of the national dual carriageway infrastructure. From Fiveways roundabout (perhaps best known for its regular appearances in traffic reports) to Thetford, the road is single track which causes long delays, particularly on Friday afternoons as the Norfolk-bound road gets snarled up.
The Highways Agency has developed plans to complete the dual carriageway, bypassing the village of Elveden which lies between Barton Mills and Thetford. However, Barton Mills Parish Council is not convinced the plans go far enough. A local resident, Peter Sturgeon, put in a technical objection to the proposal, bypassing Fiveways altogether thereby solving the problem altogether. Barton Mills Parish Council supported Mr Sturgeon's alternative proposal; however, the planning inspector backed the original plan although he acknowledged Mr Sturgeon's ideas had merit and recommended they should be looked at again in the future.
Parish Plan
In 2002-2004, a Parish Plan was undertaken for Barton Mills by a steering group made up of residents. Click on Parish Plan and Action Plan to view the findings.
